OTOH, having all the portability goo in GLib makes all the *apps* easier to build once you get GLib done. Most of the stuff in GLib _is_ needed by GTK+ apps at least ... you can't write nonbroken apps without the Unicode bits, for example.

Oh, I definitely did not suggest getting rid of any of it. At the same
time you don't need the Unicode bits to implement linked lists, hash
tables, arrays, binary trees, memory slices, etc.
