I think many just wouldn't agree - yes it adds overhead, but without
Unicode, string handling doesn't *work* - so saving the overhead is
pretty useless unless your app deals purely in binary data and never
displays any human-readable strings.
Binary/unknown-encoding text can't be displayed, even on a terminal. How
many apps don't display text? Not a whole lot of them.
