funny story: we already tried to change GTK to expand to "GNOME Tool
Kit" years ago; it got reverted pending "discussion", then we dropped
the ball in the discussion, and we never actually formalised the
change.

to be fair, if we use code size as a metric, GNOME as a whole is a
much bigger user of GTK than Gimp. but who cares about the acronym:
GTK does not expand to anything, these days. it's like GNOME: if we
want it to mean GNU Network Object Model Environment then it's clearly
wrong - except for the GNU part.

people from GNOME are driving the toolkit from the community side,
which is the only one that really matters. occasionally, we get
contributions from other people that are not using GNOME, or that are
commercially interested in keeping GTK working on specific platforms.
when those contributions dry up we have had no qualms in removing code
- e.g. DirectFB. if people want to change direction of the project,
they need to step up and work *with* GNOME, until the GNOME
contributors are a minority; after that point, they will be allowed to
move the toolkit in the direction they want, without caring about
GNOME.

that's how it works.
