Make stops because there went something wrong while creating
gtkfilesel.lo, probably a compile time error. Have a look at the compiler
output, maybe that helps.

If the compiler error is in fact an assembler error, try to configure
without optimizations ("setenv CFLAGS ; setenv LDFLAGS ; ./configure" in
(t)csh). This did the trick on a Corel Netwinder DM with gcc-2.8.1.
