got it working ! -- never been so happy to see a binary in my life!
it was several things, 1 or 2 small things in configure.ac which apparently have changed slightly between autotools updates and the tutorials / webpages i had avalible. I also re-emerged autoconf automake, m4 and make during the fiddling just for good measure, oh and set PKG_CONFIG_PATH (though i think it was already set) -- thx @ vegrinche, maybe that helped.

still, no need for qt. thank god.
....now to convert my real gtkmm projects to autotools.
