I'm sure that this aspect of Nautilus could use some testing and
improvement. It seems that there are some trash edge cases that don't work
well.
I think the desired approach is that if there's no way to make a trash
folder, Nautilus should tell you that it can't trash and offer to delete
instead. I'm not sure what it should do about a mount point with a trash
folder that gives you permission enough to see the trash, but not enough
to empty the trash.
A related feature is that if you are copying to a destination that has a
non-empty trash folder, it should offer to empty the trash if that will
free enough space to make the copy successful (not 100% accurate, but
based on adding up sizes).
