The short answer: We tried to get this working. Bugs 7601 and 7626
(<http://bugzilla.eazel.com/show_bug.cgi?id=7601>
<http://bugzilla.eazel.com/show_bug.cgi?id=7626>) are what we used to track
the work.

Sadly, we discovered the problems running under BSD too late to get it right
for 1.0 and GNOME 1.4.

Other non-Linux platforms like Solaris are working. And many Linux platforms
are working, not just "Red Hat and maybe SuSE".
