In my experience people who haven't encountered multiple
viewports/desktops only find the idea confusing initially and then
tend to prefer using it after they get used to it.  It might be nice
to have the default be one desktop/viewport but give ample opportunity
(tip o' the day, doorman, etc.) to allow the user learn about the
concept.
