Firing up the Nautilus stable branch, I see that the default there is to
have the size/item count. But it has always been possible to customize what
appears under the icons with the Icon Captions pane in Preferences.
I suspect that the default got broken when making preferences changes to
nautilus. A bug report would be good. I might look into it now, but soon
I'll have to leave my house.

No, you are reading too much into this.

On my Nautilus Gnome 1 build, the file sizes are blue. On my Nautilus Gnome
2 build, the file types are blue. This is theme-specific, I think, and it's
bad to have a theme where there's no distinction. You should look into this
for the theme you're using.

PS: Running Nautilus 1 made me realize how much better it looks. Screen
shots forthcoming.
