i'm not sure i'm understanding this correctly, but if you're desktop is
set to $HOME, why wouldnt you be able to access the home directory? it
would just be your desktop
i filed bug 62551 (http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=62551) a
few months ago, and if it were addressed (not complaining :), it would
probably go a long way to convincing people to using $HOME as the
desktop.
