Well, if you have an older machine and accidently go into a directory
containing a bunch of huge png files that start thumbnailing and bring
your system to a halt, or slow enough that you just want the activity to
stop. Or if you go to ftp://user thewrongpassword@host.com and want to
stop before you get a 'can't log in' message. Maybe not hugely common
occurances, but things to consider IMHO.
