middle-click consistency

The middle-click and shift-click behaviour in Nautilus is a little
inconsistent.  See, it only works for folders.  If you middle/shift
click on a document, the document is opened as normal but the Nautilus
window remains.

Is there a good reason for this?  It seems that from a usability
perspective it is inconsistent or technically oriented (folders and
files are the same thing from a user perspective, really; both are
things you open to get at the data inside) and also can make using
Nautilus just a tad bit harder than it could be, as you have to open the
document and then close the window after.
