I don't understand why you would like the toolbar beside the sidebar,
that is very unusual. Not at all the typical app layout. It only causes
the pathbar to get less horizontal space (which it needs) and the only
advantage from that is that the sidebar gets an extra row.

Its that law (fitz's law?) that states the less you have to move the mouse the better. Having it next to the sidebar makes it easier to access and more like the file chooser. Its also more compact overall.

Fitz law doesn't say that at all. Its about how you can easier reach a
specific position on the screen with the mouse if its on the edges of
the screen, or even better in the corners.
Fitts law is time related so the closer something is the better and also , as you say, going to quick to reach places. So we are both right :)

If there really was a law that you should have things as close as
possible we should put the menu or something used more often closest to
the view. (Which is silly of course, we all know how toplevel app
toolbars look like, look at any other application. No need to be
different here.)

Within reason I should think. Why didn't the file chooser have it above the places panel?

Also note in you screenshot how only one more directory level would make
the pathbar scroll with the pathbar to the right of the sidebar, while
in the normal toolbar position it has more space left.

you dont gain much cause you have the zoom and view selector on the toolbar which is not far off the amount of space taken by the sidebar. The toolbar is also fatter when above.

I guess I'm just used to the file chooser way but I wont make a meal of it.

jamie.
