Fitts law is time related so the closer something is the better and also 
, as you say, going to quick to reach places. So we are both right :)

Within reason I should think. Why didn't the file chooser have it above 
the places panel?

you dont gain much cause you have the zoom and view selector on the 
toolbar which is not far off the amount of space taken by the sidebar. 
The toolbar is also fatter when above.

I guess I'm just used to the file chooser way but I wont make a meal of it.
