There is just no way we can decide anything as core as the gnome
platform policy for handling filenames by just commiting a patch to
nautilus. Especially when this is an area where it is well-known that
there are multiple opinions. At the very least it has to be decided
gnome-wide. Ideally with a shared spec so other desktops can follow,
since actual real users do generally use apps from multiple platforms,
and having the names show up differently in different file selectors is
very confusing.

There are two basic approaches to solve this problem. You seem to have
picked the "gettext" solution, but the patch isn't really right for it.
The correct implementation of the gettext solution is something like:
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/desktop-devel-list/2004-December/msg00624.html

However, while I used to be a proponent of the gettext solution I've
since slightly changed my standpoint, and I'm not sure anymore which one
is best.

Btw, your argument about iterative translations is not really right, you
can do the "translated filenames on disk" solution and yet get new
translations. There are multiple ways to do this, like simply renaming
the folders on login if the translation changed.
