I can do that without pulse because I have an emu10k1 which has hardware
mixing. There is no pulseaudio running at the time of the init failure.

Try to play several audio files at the same time to see if your alsa
setup is configured correctly.
EG.:
mplayer -ao alsa file.wav
If you can play more than one file at the same time, post your
default.pa.
