I've been thinking about this for a while, and a
basic/intermediate/advanced scheme might be a Good Thing.  One of the
bitches that I've heard a lot of about GNOME2 is that suddenly all the
options are gone, and some little details that people liked and depended
on are gone (no specifics that's just the feel that I've gotten).  Would
having more options available in an advanced prefs view (or a global
option that is set via the prefs, which applications/appets check before
displaying their preference options).

Not sure if it's been discussed before (I haven't seen it) or if it's
just a lame idea, but thought I'd throw it out.  I have to agree with
Rui though, that the downfall of KDE a while back was that it was too
stringent on what you could and couldn't do.  While I agree that useless
prefs should be eliminated, sometimes it's good to have lots of choice
:)
