The solution that (I thought) had reached a consensus was to add a 
spearate "powertool" / "tweak ui" program to serve as a UI wrapper 
around a set of "advanced" gconf keys.

Has anyone worked on a such a project yet?  Is anyone planning to?  It 
doesn't sound like it'd be a hard thing to do.
