You'll be pleased to learn that the GNOME 2 HIG already addresses this.
Some applications like Evolution (actually, Evolution is the most
notable remaining unported application) are not GNOME 2 apps yet,
unfortunately. You can find the relevant section at:

GNOME 2 applications should add menu entries that contain a functional
description. When they represent a suite of items, menu entries should
be added per item in the suite (rather than a single item for the whole
suite).

So evolution would end up being, for example:

   Evolution Email
   Evolution Calendar
   Evolution Addressbook

Galeon already is:  

   Galeon Web Browser

Gnumeric already is:

   Gnumeric Spreadsheet

etc etc.
