Minutes for GNOME release team meeting 2003-01-22
===================================================

Present:                        Apologies:

Murray Cumming			Mikael Hallendal
Frederic Crozat Mark McLoughlin - difficult timezone
Jody Goldberg Luis Villa - LinuxWorld New York
Glynn Foster (Minutes) Jeff Waugh - LinuxConf, Perth, Australia
Luis Villa

Actions:

  DONE: Murray to update gnome-hello.
  => Updated and released. Good job.

  DONE: Luis to get up todate list of GNOME 2.2.0 bugs.
  => Andrew Sobala sent a couple of links around. Nothing major to
  report.

  DONE: Murray to find out status of API docs
  => Murray asked Mikael, who said they're generated from gtk-doc.

  PENDING: Jeff to create check-list of "things to do before major
  release" and maintain it so it's ready for 2.2.0.
  => Glynn posted initial list to the release team. Others to follow
  up.

  PENDING: Jeff to ensure clear directions for Xft2 are in GNOME 2.1.x
  release notes.
  => No change. Jeff is at LCA this week.

  PENDING: Jeff to try changing install-module to get/enforce entries in
  NEWS files.
  => No change. We need to invent a NEWS format, and maybe we should do
  this when it's less disruptive. He already created ftp-release-list.
  Currently parsing the ChangeLog entries.

  PENDING: Jeff to send an "description of ideal release process" email to
  the lists.
  => No change. Maybe later, after 2.2.0

  NEW: Jody to check that gnome-control-center doesn't break with
  non-existance of FAM

  NEW: Murray to identify status of blocking gstreamer/gnome-media/nautilus
  -media combo

  NEW: Murray to get status of API docs.

  NEW: Jody to ping Tim and Leslie about release team meetings.

  NEW: Murray to send list of release notes tasks for release-team members
  to claim. (Murray will take the new modules, Jody will take the control
  center)

Decisions and discussion:

  * RC2 release status

  Jeff is painting the town red at LCA this week - expects to have RC2 released by Thursday. Was waiting
  for a couple of tarballs, especially the gstreamer/gnome-media/nautilus-media blockage. This seems to
  have been sorted out thanks to Thomas releasing a 0.5.2 gstreamer pre-release to 0.6.0, which we
  expect to ship for GNOME 2.2.0 final.

  * Theme capplet

  Jody is happy with the current 2.2.0 release of gnome-control-center. Most of the bugs have been fixed
  and it's as stable as he could have hoped. There is one possible issue of it not compiling when FAM
  isn't present. Jody will investigate this.

  Jonathan and Bill discussed the issues over accessibility themes. They have come to a temporary solution
  for 2.2, with further work required during 2.4 development. Seth is still currently working on providing
  one or two themes for the release.

  * Bugs status

  No major issues at the moment - thanks to Andrew for sending out the link for the 2.2 bug list. The only
  potential blockers right now are:
  	gnome-control-center compilation issue
	gstreamer/gnome-media/nautilus-media
	gnome-themes vs gnome-accessibility themes

  * 2.2.0 Release notes

  Still have to review 2.0.0 release notes and add new content where appropriate. Much of the structure
  should be okay to keep. Murray will send out emails to a few maintainers asking them to summarize changes
  since 2.0.0.

  All to pick up part of the release notes and update content. Email discussion taking place.

Actions:

  PENDING: Jeff to create check-list of "things to do before major
  release" and maintain it so it's ready for 2.2.0.
  => No change. Jeff plans to do this real soon.

  PENDING: Jeff to ensure clear directions for Xft2 are in GNOME 2.1.x
  release notes.
  => No change. Almost done - written but not checked in.

  PENDING: Jeff to send an "description of ideal release process" email to the lists.
  => No Change. Maybe later, after 2.2.0

  PENDING: Jeff to try changing install-module to get/enforce entries in
  NEWS files.
  => Discussion about a news-format is underway on gnome-hackers.

  DONE: Jody to find out whether SUN has done work on pre-generating XML for help docs.
  => See replies to last week's minutes on desktop-devel-list.

  DONE: Jeff to invite Tim Ney and Leslie to the next meeting.
  => No response yet. Maybe they will be at the next meeting.

  NEW: Luis to email the bugsquad to try to delegate some people to give us must-be-fixed and
  known-bugs-at-release-time status reports.

  NEW: Murray to ask Mikael Hallendal about future API Doc status reports.

  NEW: Murray to look at gnome-hello and check that it's up-to-date and as useful as possible.

Decisions and discussion:

  * Bug status

  Luis is still far too busy to give us his regular bug status reports. Andrew Sobala gave
  us a great report last week, so maybe the bugsquad can take over some of this. Luis will try to
  organise something.

  * Release Status:

  RC1 slipped by a couple of days. Jeff will call for an RC2, to be released on Tuesday.

  Reports of metacity being "sluggish" in RC1, but that's fixed apparently. The new NVIDIA drivers
  also seem to be causing problems, so remember that if someone asks.

  * API Documentation:

  Mikael Hallendal used to track API docs coverage, but not recently. We discussed some possible
  ways to improve things, but it's difficult after the code has been written.

  Some discussion about gedit and gnome-hello as examples. gedit is becoming a little more complex,
  so maybe we should make sure that gnome-hello is a good example of build files and code. Murray
  will look.
