This might be confusing. What we want to avoid in general is the "EEK!
Where did my windows disappear?" -issue, so stuff should just not get
hidden all of a sudden. It might look like the programs crashed or quit
to a novice user, and he/she might just try to restart the applications
and then everything would pop back up.. Of course the same problem
exists with the "show desktop" button as well, but at least it is a
toggle. But just doing it from a seemingly innocent folder icon in the
file manager might be confusing.

I cannot but think that just having the "Desktop" folder be the homedir
itself would neatly solve this problem, but it might not be that
practical of a solution in reality. I am still using it myself though
(hm, something like for 3 years now), and it solves the problem nicely
since there is no "desktop" dir that would show in many places.. But
perhaps it is not the thing we want to do by default. 

On OSX you can browse to the Desktop folder as well, it looks like a
normal folder, auto-arranged.
