The desktop entry spec defines a NoDisplay=true line you can put in
your .desktop file to avoid showing it in the menus. In the bug buddy
case a second .desktop with NoDisplay set could be used to register the
mime type.
I don't know if NoDisplay is handled in the vfolders/panel menu code
right now, but it would be worth implementing before 2.8.
