I think this is not entirely true. The effect is not as strong, but if
you keep the window the same size, you always have to scroll the same
amount. This gives a rough direction for starting the search for the
wanted folder for example ("scroll to end and then few clicks up").
That coupled with the fact that the horizontal position remains even
if you scroll up and down helps more than the compactness of the list
view in my opinion.
