So  your proposal is pretty similar to my earlier proposal, except that
mine adds an new 'DescriptiveName' field for the combined string:

Type=Application
Name=Totem
GenericName=Movie Player
DescriptiveName=Totem Movie Player

This has the advantage that the Name field can remain just as the spec
says, the application name. It has the disadvantage that it adds a new
field that we would
have to add to the spec.

You can use the same algorithm that you propopsed:

if (GenericName is unique in menu)
   use GenericName
else
   use DescriptiveName
