So, I downgraded the at-spi2 framework from the git to 2.20.1 for the
atk and 20.2.2 for the core, but still no joy. Any way to monitor the
events via the text console to see what is happening or why its not
happening?

Firefox is GTK 2, GNOME terminal is GTK 3. At least so far as I know,
Gentoo's firefox may be using GTK 3, although I doubt it.
And to my horror, I can't get into the orca preference at all.
Where are you trying to access Orca's preferences from? Or in other words,
what currently has focus when you attempt to press Orca plus insert?

How do
