Re: libtool doesn't like static libs, so why does GNOME require one on Solaris?



Try using libtool-1.3b.  It will allow you to link a static library
against a dynamic library on FreeBSD, GNU/Linux, GNU Hurd and Solaris.
That should solve your problem.
