i18n with autoconf but not automake

Hi,
Is there any way to get i18n into my two gnome programs without
using automake? I use autoconf at the moment. I now using automake
is the easiest way, it works... but the produced Makefile.in is huge
and I want to keep they small, using only autoconf.
Some help?
