root window

Greetings.

Is there any way to get a window to 'become' _the_ root window or desktop?

One way I can think of to make it _seem_ like a window has become root is

  (1) make a decorationless window
  (2) maximize it
  (3) make it always on bottom

Is that the only way to do it?
