Thanks for the help, Havoc. Both GNOME and autoconf/automake are
installed with --prefix=/usr/local.  Furthermore, I ran autogen.sh
with the command-line you suggested:

    ACLOCAL_FLAGS='-I /usr/local/share/aclocal' ./autogen.sh

However, autogen.sh still dies with

    ./configure: AM_GNU_GETTEXT: not found
    ./configure: syntax error at line 1701: `AM_PATH_GLIB' unexpected

But it appears that AM_PATH_GLIB should have been found!

[0 /usr/local/share/aclocal] grep AM_PATH_GLIB *
glib.m4:dnl AM_PATH_GLIB([MINIMUM-VERSION, [ACTION-IF-FOUND [,
ACTION-IF-NOT-FOUND [, MODULES]]]])
glib.m4:AC_DEFUN(AM_PATH_GLIB,
libIDL.m4:  AM_PATH_GLIB(1.2.0)

Do you have any further suggestions?

Thanks,
Aron
