gdk-pixbuf loads and scales images (synchronous or asynchronous), does
image alpha compositing, loads animations, and in the GTK 2.0 version
also saves images. That's it, and all it will ever do.

Imlib2 does that and also contains a bunch of features we have in
libart and other libraries. So Imlib2's features heavily overlap parts
of GNOME outside of gdk-pixbuf.
