mime content-type + application

Hi,


How can one register for a specific application for a mime-type ?
For example, the TIFF format can embed different image compression
formats (notably the G3/G4 fax formats). Unfortunately there is no
specific mime-type for each one of them, the distinction having to
be done through the "application" mime-field.

Can GNOME with or without gnome-vfs handle this field ? And how ?
