developer.gnome.org is probably a really bad place to point new users.
 It's more confusing than helpful and has way too many harmingly
out-of-date docs.  For building from CVS, there's a couple different
pages out there.  The one I remember is
http://www.gnome.org/~newren/tutorials/developing-with-gnome/html/ch04.html,
but that's just because I wrote it.  The other ones are good too, but
the people who wrote them will have to reply with the url because I
don't remember it atm.
