Braindum: printing (Re: Some 2.6 thinking)

Lets make some braindumps:

What packages are available (on more than one OS) for:

+ generating printable files (i.e. PDF, Postscript, DVI)
+ converting print-files (if we choose to use more than one standard)
+ managing print queues
+ choosing some print-related properties (page formats, etc)
  (i.e. a "print" dialog)

And what features do we need, which are not provided by these packages 
or what things have to be more clarified ?

Evryone here should just say what comes in mind.
