... but this script would break a whole lot of applications that rely
on .trash ... is that really necessary?

No-one suggested 100 years of compatibility. But considering everything
currently uses .trash, switching immediately to .local/share/trash with
no backwards compatibility and ALSO insisting on removing .trash is
asking for trouble.
