I think the color has to do with the gtk theme. My background flashes the
same grey as the gtk theme ( actually its the pixmap that is used as the
background for the theme which is grey with wavy tones ). If you try a
different theme I think it will probably flash a different color. I took a
brief look into the problem to see if it was something I could solve, but it
seemed to me that the desktop window was created and shown well before it
would display the background and icons. Perhaps when the desktop window is
created nautilus could show the background imediately?
