I checked my system (Mandrake) and its got both packages....
automake-1.4.23p6mdk and automake1.7-1.7.6-1mdk installed.
This is a parallel install that when I look in the RPM
comments I see that some time back whoever did the
packaging had got 1.4 and 1.7 to be in parallel.
Also checking the files provided by the 1.4 package and
yes there is no aclocal python.m4 file provided this is
only in my RPM for the 1.7.
The commands.....
[lincoln penguin lincoln]$ aclocal --print-ac-dir;aclocal-1.7 --print-ac-dir
returns.....
/usr/share/aclocal
/usr/share/aclocal
This can't work correctly.
aclocal lookup into /usr/share/aclocal-<ver> before /usr/share/aclocal and
thios allow have installed multiple version of automake/aclocal but if
core aclocal macros are shared this can be source many other bugs.
In this case seems fix in autogen.sh is workaroud for buggy automake from
MDK. MDK is widely used and this cause of many reports ..
I can also ask why you are still want use am 1.4 ? Last bunch of packages
which was require this version was KDE but latest can use also latest
am/ac/lt tools.
If you have installed am 1.4 only because it was installed during
install time uninstalling old 1.4 instance of automake will probaly
cure your problems.
