I guess that this is different from:

Edit -> Preferences -> General -> Visible Columns -> mark year, then
sort with it as usual.

Which allow to play the songs in the order of the year. The only
difference I could see from what you say is the visual feedback that
you don't get from the Browser.

And if that is the case and you want to implement it, as a nobody who
lkes and use rhythmbox I would like that this option be a gconf key. I
think preferences windows is very clean right now.
