Totem (GStreamer backend)
hmm..how to ask in a non offensive manner...
does the gstreamer backend work fine now?
i am using gentoo, so i can specify if i want totem with the xine or
with the gstreamer backend.
i was/am a gstreamer fan, so i specified an enable-gstreamer global flag.
but totem never worked for me.
there were a lot of avi files for which he did not open them, opened but
froze and so on.
then a month ago, i told my gentoo system, that he should still use
gstreamer globally, but let's use xine for totem.
and behold... i got thumbnails for video files, ALL my avi files are
working now.
totem is now very usable for me...
(well, for serious movie watching i still use mplayer, because it has
better keyboard shortcuts...
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=154831 ;), but totem is very
useful for example to open remote files via gnome-vfs)
so, what i am trying to say is:
is the gstreamer backend now mature enough (or: is it as good as the
xine one?)... because if still not, then imho it should wait until it
is, before it becomes a part of gnome..
imho it's better not to ship a video player than to ship a half-working one.
of course, if it works now fine, i will be happy to have it as a part of
gnome ;)
