Also, it would be great if you could test --disable-services to come
back to the old gnome-session, and see if the patch breaks anything.

as I said, apply the *.patch files, compile all the affected modules. To
make sure all services are started, first, check they are really started
(that is, nautilus is running, etc), then, for other non-visual
services, see if the process is indeed running.
