IIRC NextSTEP had something like that and MacOSX maybe too (not sure),
there is also a little hack for Sawfish that accomplishes a similar
thing (called 'services').
Works simple by providing a context menu entry that provides a way so
that the user can 'pipe' the current selection directly to some tool,
could be used for stuff like sorting, translation, line breaking or
whatever. Very easy to use and quite powerfull, would be nice to see
something like that in Gnome apps.
