I remember it was decided to use a kernel-like naming scheme, wasn't it?

That was my thinking. So new releases of 1.0 would be called 1.0.5, 1.0.6,
 etc. But if we decide to do some bigger work, then we'd do a 1.2 release.
 Before 1.2 itself was ready, the development releases would be 1.1, 1.1.1,
 etc. That's how I understand the approach (as used by GTK, for example).
