There *is* a choice, as has been said many times.  There is a documented
GConf key you can set, Dave Camp has said they are going to add a
visible preference to set the browse mode by default, and you can press
Browse Filesystem in Applications to open a browser window.  No-one is
saying you must use spatial mode, people just ask that you *try it*.  If
you don't like it after a few days, by all means use browser mode.
