OK, I found it :)

It's not really finished yet and it requires you to patch gtk,
recompile gtk and also recompile all your gtk apps. Hopefully this
will make it's way into gtk proper and then we will get transparent
support in all gtk apps :)

(Perhaps some GNOME types could get in on the development of this and
finish it ASAP?)
